Sometimes, living and working with 12 people in a small building in Al Asad feels like it would make a great reality show. Like right now, we are going on our fourth day without running water. At first it was due to a lack of power to run the pumps. Then, today, we found out that the insurgents had blown up part of the main water line that feeds the base—another 5 to seven days before we can expect water to be freely flowing through our pipes. Kind of reminds me of Survivor! Along that vain, after two months you do get to know people pretty well—maybe too well! The water issue combined with the inherent closeness makes for some great fun! But, unlike Survivor nobody gets voted off of this island—we need everyone to make the team work and get the job done. So, not exactly like Survivor (can’t wait for the new season to start and to get the DVDs in the mail—Andrew!??!!).
Then there is the exciting investigations aspect of the job; kind of like CSI or that great show that was on for a while last year: Medical Investigations. Heck, they already have JAG and NCIS—two wonderful shows about Navy investigators of crime—why not a show about Navy medical investigations and surveillance? This could be a combo between Survivor, CSI, JAG, Medical Investigations and Over There! Who wouldn’t want to watch?? Madcap adventures while performing Environmental Health Site Assessments on far off bases, identifying unknown goop from airplanes (very dramatic), swooping off to outbreak investigations where the lives of EVERONE hang in the balance, filtering gallons of water to look for itsy-bitsy parasites that cause disproportionate amounts of watery stool, chow hall capers—the possibilities are endless…
On second thought, maybe I will just read the book…
